David Schröder Design, model, prototype, test, analyse and evaluate a mechanical human arm (shoulder to wrist)


Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Materials Science, grade: 1,0, University of the West of England, Bristol, course: Individual Project, 75 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This study sets out to investigate, model and analyse a mechanical human arm. The study consists of four main steps: the literature research, modelling the mechanical human arm, building the model and finally analysing it.The mechanical human arm is the same size as the real human arm of a 20-year-old male. The range of motion is also the same.The investigations cover the functionality of real human arms, the history of prostheses, and applications of mechanical human arms in robotics. Requirements that are based on these information are defined and lead to the first model. This model is tested, rapid-prototyped and evaluated. Weaknesses are shown and an improved model is developed. Analyses of stresses and strains support the design decisions.The model is designed in such a way that it is possible to add in further investigations components such as motors, pneumatic or hydraulic elements in order to allow the model to be part of a humanoid robot.

Bone Tissue Engineering is a promising field that helps human needs by applying the principles of biology and engineering to the development of feasible substitutes that restore and retain the function of human bone tissues. The live cells in the body attach to the normal scaffold known as extracellular matrix but in in-vitro studies presence of a scaffold is essential to keep cells alive. Therefore, good cell adhesion on scaffolds is essential for successful tissue engineering. The aim of this book is to identify the key factors of coating which leads to better cell adhesion and to establish the relationship of cells’ adhesion and the treatment of substrates. Another aim is to apply four-point bending system to stimulate bone cells and finally evaluate bone cells’ response to the mechanical stimuli on different substrates by morphology alteration using histological and immunological staining methods. Human bone cell line (MG-63) and rat primary bone cells were used in this study. Two-dimensional substrates were used as a scaffold model. The selected substrates included PLLA, PLLA coated with PDLLA-b-PEO co-polymer, collagen coated, RGD grafted PLLA-PEO coated substrates.
