David Schröder Design, model, prototype, test, analyse and evaluate a mechanical human arm (shoulder to wrist)

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Materials Science, grade: 1,0, University of the West of England, Bristol, course: Individual Project, 75 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This study sets out to investigate, model and analyse a mechanical human arm. The study consists of four main steps: the literature research, modelling the mechanical human arm, building the model and finally analysing it.The mechanical human arm is the same size as the real human arm of a 20-year-old male. The range of motion is also the same. The investigations cover the functionality of real human arms, the history of prostheses, and applications of mechanical human arms in robotics. Requirements that are based on these information are defined and lead to the first model. This model is tested, rapid-prototyped and evaluated. Weaknesses are shown and an improved model is developed. Analyses of stresses and strains support the design decisions. The model is designed in such a way that it is possible to add in further investigations components such as motors, pneumatic or hydraulic elements in order to allow the model to be part of a humanoid robot.

Farshid Sefat Bone Cells and Mechanical Stimulation

Bone Tissue Engineering is a promising field that helps human needs by applying the principles of biology and engineering to the development of feasible substitutes that restore and retain the function of human bone tissues. The live cells in the body attach to the normal scaffold known as extracellular matrix but in in-vitro studies presence of a scaffold is essential to keep cells alive. Therefore, good cell adhesion on scaffolds is essential for successful tissue engineering. The aim of this book is to identify the key factors of coating which leads to better cell adhesion and to establish the relationship of cells’ adhesion and the treatment of substrates. Another aim is to apply four-point bending system to stimulate bone cells and finally evaluate bone cells’ response to the mechanical stimuli on different substrates by morphology alteration using histological and immunological staining methods. Human bone cell line (MG-63) and rat primary bone cells were used in this study. Two-dimensional substrates were used as a scaffold model. The selected substrates included PLLA, PLLA coated with PDLLA-b-PEO co-polymer, collagen coated, RGD grafted PLLA-PEO coated substrates.

Bone Cancer: Primary Cancers and Metastases

Bone Cancer, Second Edition comprehensively investigates key discoveries in the field of bone biology over the last five years that have led to the development of entirely new areas for investigation, such as therapies which combine surgery and biological approaches. The Second Edition expands on the original overview of bone cancer development (physiology and pathophysiology), with key chapters from the first edition, and offers numerous new chapters describing the new concepts of bone cancer biology and therapy, for both primary bone tumors as well as bone metastases. Each chapter has been written by internationally recognized specialists on the bone cancer microenvironment, bone metastases, osteoclast biology in bone cancer, proteomics, bone niche, circulating tumor cells, and clinical trials. Given the global prevalence of breast and prostate cancers, knowledge of bone biology has become essential for everyone within the medical and cancer research communities. Bone Cancer continues to offer the only translational reference to cover all aspects of primary bone cancer and bone metastases - from bench to bedside: development (cellular and molecular mechanisms), genomic and proteomic analyses, clinical analyses (histopathology, imaging, pain monitoring), as well as new therapeutic approaches and clinical trials for primary bone tumors and bone metastases. - Presents a comprehensive, translational source for all aspects of primary bone cancer and bone metastases in one refere...

J. McGeough A. The Engineering of Human Joint Replacements

Since the major pioneering of joint replacement surgery more than fifty years ago, much research and progress has been made in the field of arthroplasty with new insights into better materials, types of cement and bone-cell compatible coatings, and a better understanding of the causes of implant failure. With an increasingly ageing population the requirement for arthroplastic surgery is manifest; over 800,000 hips worldwide are replaced each year, and replacement surgery is performed for almost every joint of the body. The Engineering of Human Joint Replacements covers the design, engineering, production and manufacture of human joint replacements, as well as associated engineering concerns such as surface coatings, orthopedic bone cement, the causes and effects of wear and tear, and rapid prototyping for clinical evaluation. Materials evaluation and selection is discussed, as well as production processes and insertion methods. The author provides an overview of skeletal anatomy and the effects of pain and deterioration in order to put the engineering principles into a medical context. Examples of joint replacements for the most common regions of the body are included, and aspects of clinical studies of these cases are discussed. Key Features: • Provides an overview of the engineering materials and processes involved in the manufacture of human joint replacements • Sets the scene for engineers and clinicians embarking on research into joint replacements • Includes clinical and industrial examples and points the way to future developments • Provides information on medical device companies with an engineering guide to the requirements for joint replacement The Engineering of Human Joint Replacements bridges the divide between engineering and orthopaedic surgery, offering an introductory text to young engineers entering the field, as well as a reference for medical staff who will benefit from an understanding of the materials and methods used in their design, engineering and manufacture.

Shruti Kakkar Sharma,Mukul Padhye and Saurabh Sharma A Craft To Graft

Through better understanding of the biology of bone healing, bone regeneration and bone remodeling in combination with grafting procedures, it is possible today to treat almost every patient with implant supported restoration. We are able to rebuild a functional alveolar crest, permitting adequate implant insertion even in cases with extreme bone atrophy and bone height less than a few millimeters, and to get similar long-term results as for implantation in non-grafted bone. There are several possibilities for augmentation of bone volume. Depending on the situation, indication and adequate diagnosis, the treatment options can be extended, from minimally invasive procedures with locally harvested bone grafts in local anesthesia, to very sophisticated grafting techniques for 3D bone reconstruction with extra oral harvested bone grafts in combination with orthognathic surgery procedures.

Paul Jersild The Nature of Our Humanity. Ethics in Genetics and Biotechnology

This book addresses a current, frontline issue in the perennial exchange between science and religion. Jersild surveys the contemporary scene in genetic research and the visionary goals of a number of scientists concerning the human future. He focuses on human identity - "Who Are We?" - as the critical question, first addressing our biological origins in light of evolution and presenting a holistic understanding of human nature. He then turns to the world of biotechnology and the tension between human limitations and human potential in light of prospective genetic enhancements. The implications of genetic engineering, the impact of pharmacology, and the human desire for perfection and immortality all enter into a volatile mix of ideas and aspirations concerning the human future. Jersild brings a Christian perspective to these developments in spelling out a responsible stance.

Daniel Levy, Natan Sznaider Human Rights and Memory

Memories of historical events like the Holocaust have played a key role in the internationalization of human rights. Their importance lies in their ability to bridge the universal and the particular-the universality of human values and the particularity of memories rooted in local human experiences. In Human Rights and Memory, Levy and Sznaider trace the growth of human rights discourse since World War II and interpret its deployment of memories as a new form of cosmopolitanism, exemplifying a dynamic through which global concerns become part of local experiences, and vice versa.
